unrealistic expectations and ultimate fails. perfectionism makes balance hard...

On Sunday in Relief Society (or the hour when we meet together just as women from our church congregation) our lesson was about doing God's will in our daily lives.

In the course of the discussion we ended up talking a lot about perceived failures, realistic expectations and making real progress. It seemed that many of the women had a hard time knowing how to be more realistic and flexible about their daily expectations and task-lists for themselves while still pushing themselves to grow and progress.  Some were all for simplified personal expectations and others felt that being too simplified left them feeling like they weren't striving to become more.

I did a lot of listening during the discussion and thought a lot about where I stand.  I am, by nature, a perfectionist and I've often found myself disappointed with what I've accomplished at the end of a day.  Yesterday for example,  I decided I was going to clean the bathrooms in our apartment and try and do some more cleaning and tidying and I did all that but, I never got Lee dressed and I didn't think of anything for dinner, nor did I go grocery shopping so we even had enough food in the cupboards to "wing it" and instead of playing with Lee the whole time he was awake during the day, I read a book during quite a bit of the time too.  (I get hooked in books So easily)

So, last night I found myself feeling pretty "blah" even though I Had cleaned the bathrooms and swept and mopped and tidied some other things up and I even had some really good play time with Lee.  But, I felt like it wasn't enough and that my day had been kind of wasted.  "Why can't I be better at focusing on, as one blogger says, the "drops of awesome" I do each day?", I thought to myself.

Well today, as I was reading a talk from the latest General Conference for the LDS church, I was reminded again of the heart of the message from our lesson on Sunday; if we are seeking to do what God wants from us each day, then we can't go wrong with the balance of how much to do or what to spend our time doing.
follow this link to read it now:
("Four Titles", President Dieter F. Uchtdorf)

Highlights for me (from the talk):

^#1 Progression is meant to stretch us.^

"Although we recognize that none of us are perfect, we do not use that fact as an excuse to lower our expectations, to live beneath our privileges, to delay the day of our repentance, or to refuse to grow into better, more perfect, more refined followers of our Master and King."

- What it means to live this way changes daily.  Because we are looking to God to know His will (or desire) for how we utilize a given day, what may feel like NOTHING on one day, may be all that He wants (and all that we can muster) on another day.
I remember when I was serving as a full-time missionary for our church I had the hardest time ever feeling like I was giving 100%, there was literally always more I could do and ways to serve better.  I got a letter from my best friend, Nicole, who was also serving at the time.  She said in the letter something to this effect, "you know what Tanner, sometimes 50% IS 100% for that day.  Your best isn't going to be the exact same every day."

^#2 Enjoy the process.^

"Without the Atonement of Jesus Christ, life would be a dead-end road without hope or future. With the Atonement, life is an ennobling, inspiring journey of growth and development that leads to eternal life in the presence of our Heavenly Father."

-Because of Christ's sacrifice for each of us, this process of progression through life is even possible, that perspective can bring us a lot of happiness.  It's easy for people like me to get caught up in the details of all that is (or can) go wrong and simply overlook the fact that we even can change everyday.  When we are trying, the best we can, to keep our life (and schedule) in line with what God wants, we can and will experience the real peace and happiness that accompanies it,  because of our willingness to utilize the sacrifice that Christ has already made for us.

^#3 I am me and always should be.^

"...while the Atonement is meant to help us all become more like Christ, it is not meant to make us all the same. Sometimes we confuse differences in personality with sin."

- I LOVE this, yes, we're all trying to become more like Christ and be better people but that doesn't mean that progression looks the same on everyone.  I think that it's, for me at least, all too easy to see the way someone does things and either think that they are doing it (whatever it is) "wrong" or that I am doing it "wrong".  Sometimes I think, "how many times will I have to be told not to compare, for good or bad?" Well, a few more most likely.
I love this reminder, God wants us to be different.
Once again, because we are looking to God for His guidance and approval for how we spend our time, we don't have to decide if something is a good idea based on who else is doing it.

I'm a perfectionist but I'm not perfect.  I know this type of living and thinking doesn't come overnight. (I wish it would) But, I am grateful that it's possible.
Here's to progression, happy Tuesday.

*clarification: I am not saying that we just "show up", as it were, each morning with a completely blank slate and say "tell me what to do with every second of every day."  I believe that God expects us to be aware of things we need and would like to do and seek His help in knowing which should be most important and always be open to the idea of doing something we hadn't thought of that He needs us to do that day. Also, because of our access to God's word through ancient scripture and through our living leaders, we already know some things that should always be considered "top priority".

goodnight, time flies.

Four years ago...

Today:
Woke up to Lee crying (too) early this morning and as Kevin came back from calming him back down I mumbled, "happy anniversary Kevin." We have, to date, never actually "celebrated" an anniversary in the traditional sense. (unless a move, extended family events, house hunting, or a doctor's appointment count) Granted, we aren't great "celebrators" to begin with, but every year we say, "next year we are going to celebrate our anniversary." Maybe next year. :)

That said, as we were driving to meet my new (yes at 32 weeks) baby doctor this morning, we were amazed at how much has happened in the last four years and how much we/our lives have changed. (especially the last year; *almost* two babies, the end of Kevin's academic education, a cross-country move and the beginning of a "real" job.)

Looking through pictures of our wedding brought back strong memories of how I felt then, the kind of relationship we had and people we were.
Needless to say, we've changed, a lot and mostly for the best. Some of the things we've experienced I would have been so excited to anticipate and others probably would have kept me up at night with fear and worry.
It really is a blessing that life comes one day at a time and that, good and bad, I didn't know/don't know what was/is ahead for us.  I'm just really grateful that we get to face it all together and that whatever life brings will be exactly what we need.
Happy Anniversary Kevin.

walking on sunshine.

I've probably said it before but, this winter has been a hard one for me.  It has felt so long and frozen and cold.  You'd think growing up almost my entire life in Utah I would be used to or at least tolerant of winters by now...not so much.

So when we had a week of sunshine and warmth, I (we) rejoiced.  I soaked up the rays of sunshine every chance I got.  I don't think Lee even remembers what outside or sunshine is.  I loved being able to take him out on walks everyday and take him to the park to try out the slide for the first time.  (he was actually pretty indifferent to the whole experience but I'm sure he'll warm up to it.)
This week is hopefully full of some of the same sunshine that is so good for my soul.  Here's to sunshine.
Happy Monday!

birthday love.

We definitely spread the "birthday love" out over a stretch of a few weeks this time around. Kevin and I have birthdays that fall in the same week each year and this year we have celebrated and celebrated.  We have had Such a fantastic time with family and friends.
The fam before Tucanos.

Ann and Lee.
We went out to eat at Tucanos with Annie, Scott, Jenna and their baby Emily. (they give a buy one:get one free coupon for birthdays. sign up here.) It was deliciously FILLING. (I can only eat so much meat...)We couldn't feed Lee fast enough. It was fun to spend time eating with S&J without all of us chasing kids, and of course we are getting in as much "Annie time" as we can before she leaves in a few weeks.

Mostly it was *REALLY FUN* to actually get out. Admittedly Kev and I have never been good at that and it got worse once we had Lee, we've been on one whole date since he was born.... Well, two now if it counts to take him with us.:)

We had a celebratory dinner with my whole family on Sunday, and for dessert Annie made this *INCREDIBLE* cake which actually isn't too tricky.  (try it! get the recipe here.) Chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, chocolate ganache...
Kevin blew out half the candles but...he was the one taking pictures so we missed it.  :( We are trying to soak up the times that we can all be together before Annie and Dave leave on missions and we move this spring when Kevin finishes his Masters.
Of course he was laughing right Before the pic.

Lee and Ann.

On Monday we took Lee swimming for the first time at the Bountiful Rec Center.  It was PACKED because of the holiday and Lee didn't care much for the crowd in the main pool area. But had a *blast* once we took him in the lap swim area.  We all had a great time, my mom even went on the water slide. :)

After swimming we went out to dinner at Arella Pizzeria in Bountiful.  Every-Single-Pizza was amazing.  Kevin, being the food connoisseur that he is, was in *heaven*. We had a traditional margarita pizza with fresh mozzarella and basil. (my favorite) We also had an Alfredo chicken and bacon pizza, a arugula and blue cheese pizza with caramelized pears and candied pecans and a pesto chicken pizza with tomatoes and mushrooms.   It was all delicious.
*Annie, David, Mom and Dad.*

*Kevin, me and Lee.*

*alfredo chicken and bacon pizza and arugula pizza.*

*pesto chicken pizza.*

Ann and Dave.

On my actual "birth-day" my cousin and friend Ashley Anne surprised me by coming over with Clara Mae to cook us a delicious lunch, give me a hand and foot massage and spend the day chatting.  It was wonderful.  (Ashley's birthday is this week too and we're going out tonight with the hubbies and kids to celebrate together!)

Mostly, I am a sucker for good food and even more for good company, I have felt showered with both and so blessed to spend my last birthday around my family...with them.  Thank you, thank you!

6 months this week. Go baby Lee.

So our little baby Lee is already 6 months  this week.  (tomorrow) Woot.  Kevin took some pictures of Lee for me about a month ago. And...we're just getting to them.  So, here they are. :) I hope you all are enjoying this rainy, cold Wednesday too.

Happy 1/2 birthday to Lee Daken.  He is so much fun right now. He chatters all the time, sits up a lot, still hates tummy time, throws some tantrums, loves his "solid" foods, laughs at all of Kevin's jokes and is generally thrilled for any attention from his Momma and Papa.

lately.

Lee and I have little adventures and milestones every day.  Lately we've spent a few weekends with my parents while Kevin has been out in the desert near Wendover gathering core samples for his Geology thesis. It's been fun to spend time with them, especially since we'll be moving far away once graduation rolls around.  For now we are LOVING being close and having time with them.

1. catching some zzz's with Grandma. 2. chillin' with uncle Dave.   3. snuggles with Grandpa. 4. peek-a-boo with Papa. (we're SO glad when Daddy comes home!) 5. lounging and chatting with Grandpa. 6. stolen pudding spoon. (no pudding yet...Dave.) 7. cousin time: with cousin Chloe. (she is almost exactly two months younger than Lee) 8. uncle Scott's favorite cookies at his belated birthday bash. 9. tuckered out bobble head. :) 10. starting young with his ukulele skills. (and the birth of Lee's theme song by uncle Dave...VERY catchy..."well, baby Lee...") 11. chewing on some green bell pepper (Lee loved it..and drooled all over me.) 12. nearly naked conference time with uncle Matty. (nothing better than a baby in a diaper.) 13. more conference with uncle Dave. 14. saying "hi" to Papa during his school day. 15. getting really close to sitting up on his own. 16. all "growed" up.  17. fall fav outfit. 18. enjoying the fall mountains near our house while Papa does 'Friends of Scouting'. 19. the end of a beautiful hike just above our house to Escalante's Cross. 20. bath time.

"He Lives In You." Me. Us.

I just returned from a Tanner family reunion with my dad’s family.  I LOVE Tanner gatherings.  With my dad being 1 of 13 children our family is So large that big gatherings only happen once every 2 years.  Someone just figured out at this last reunion that there are now 103 or 106 great-grandchildren with 6 on the way!

As usual after a family get-together I was reminded again how family is really the most important thing in life, and how wonderful it is to have people who care deeply about you.  How evident it is to me that such an important social unit is meant to be FOREVER .

The theme of this year’s reunion was “He Lives In You” from the Broadway version of The Lion King.  The song is a reminder to Simba that his father never really left him, that what he taught and who he was lives on within him, Simba.
In reference to the theme, we were remembering and celebrating the fantastic person that my Grandpa, William Coats Tanner Jr. was and is.  What a posterity he has left behind! As we shared stories and reminisced about Grandpa I realized just how true that statement was, He really Does live in all of us Tanners, in one way or another we are so much like him.  And his legacy of Choosing who you want to be and especially Choosing to be Happy has had Eternal impact on each of us in my opinion.

Check out the song:He Lives In You.

With all this in mind I was re-watching Elder Nelson’s talk in the LDS General Conference from April of this year and one part really stood out to me, probably because of my recent train of thought;

"Under God’s great plan of happiness, families can be sealed in temples and be prepared to return to dwell in His holy presence forever. That is eternal life! It fulfills the deepest longings of the human soul—the natural yearning for endless association with beloved members of one’s family."

-Elder Nelson, “Thanks Be To God”, LDS General Conference, April 2012

And I couldn’t help but think that even more than my Grandpa Tanner we ALL have a Heavenly Father who lives in each of us.  Who wants us to know and follow all the council that He has given us to make sure that we become like Him so that we can Live WITH Him forever.
